Victoria University’s solution to safer button batteries

Victoria University’s senior lecturer Jeongbin Ok from the School of Design has developed a dye which allows early detection of a child ingesting a button battery.

The dye allows saliva to change colour and omits a foul taste, prompting the battery to be spat out before full ingestion. This ingenuity allows parents and caregivers to safely identify if a child has inserted a button battery into their mouths.

Jeongbin’s invention has been patented in the international market and is now being promoted here. MBIE Trading Standards are working with Victoria University to ensure this idea reaches the right audiences and allows the message of safer button batteries to be broadcast commercially.
